The Australian Standard AS1288 (2021) introduced stricter requirements for all barriers.

If you’re installing or upgrading a glass balustrade or barrier, it’s essential to understand the various compliance factors that will affect your design choices.

These include but are not limited to:

Building classification
Height off the ground – toughened may be restricted over 5 meters
Wind loading
Human impact
Various load factors
Handrail type – exposed edges may need interlinking rails or an engineered solution

Additionally, spigot, point (face-fixed), or core-drilled fixings may need to comply as a whole performance solution, either through engineering or laboratory testing.

NOTE: The latest National Construction Code determines any fall over one meter – whether from a balcony or in a pool area requires a barrier. At Greater Glass, we collaborate with our customers to design solutions that meet these compliance standards.

Types of glass used for balustrades and pool fences

The type of glass we use for glass balustrading and pool fencing will largely depend on compliance and the design. This can vary a lot but typically ranges from 10mm Toughened Grade A Safety Glass up to 21.52 Toughened Laminate.

All our projects feature custom-made glass panels and purpose-built hardware, tailored to the exact specifications of your space (staircases, balconies, pool areas and more) – all while considering factors such as design, compliance, functionality and project costs.

In some instances, we can utilise prefabricated, budget-friendly imported panels sourced from reputable Australian-owned companies.

Of course, the design process involves assessing key elements for the glass and hardware fixing to ensure compliance and building safety.

Hardware & Aesthetic Considerations

Propping open a gate for any period will adversely affect functionality, and issues arising from such actions are not covered by the warranty.
Due to the intrinsic nature of glass, our guarantee does not cover glass breakage or scratches.
Stainless steel fixings and handrails should be cleaned regularly to ensure the longevity of the manufacturer’s warranty.
